Tettegouche by Virginia Sattler-Reimer is a beautiful Fair Isle tam knit in the round using fingering weight yarn on small needles.

In this workshop, you will learn how to knit colourwork with two hands, using both continental and English styles of knitting (i.e., picking and throwing). With some practice (and possibly tensioning adjustments), you should be able to create a consistent gauge with both hands. During the workshop, we will not begin the hat but instead will knit a gauge swatch to determine the hat will fit! (This project will be a bit easier if you’ve taken our Intro to Stranded Colourwork class!)

You will also learn about colour dominance in colourwork, how and when to catch your floats, and how to read a colourwork pattern.

Supplies needed:

  • Five colours of fingering weight yarn (approximately 30 g of the main colour and varying amounts--but less than 20 g each--of the other four colours)
  • 3 mm 16" circular needle (or size needed to get gauge, which is to be determined)

To knit the actual hat, note that you will need more than this! This hat is not an inexpensive venture if you don't yet have a large selection of knitting needles. You will need:

  • Circular needles the size you got gauge on in 16" and 24" lengths
  • Circular needles one size smaller than you got gauge on in 16" length
  • Double-pointed needles or a long (32" or 40") circular in the size you got gauge on for decreasing at the top
  • Several stitch markers

You will get 15% off yarn purchased for this workshop. Hat pattern is included.
