Fission knitting is a new knitting technique pioneered by Mary W. Martin. It features a thick, squishy, marled background fabric with cables that dance on top. In this class we work together to complete a beginner level fission knitting cowl.

Materials needed:

  • two 100 g skeins of fingering weight yarn in contrasting colours**
  • a 4.5 mm 24" or 32" circular needle
  • a locking stitch marker
  • four circular stitch markers
  • a tapestry needle
  • a pair of scissors

** Important note regarding choosing yarn for this project: a superwash merino is the best yarn for fission knitting. Ideally, the yarn needs to be round and spun tightly without any halo or stickiness to it. The colours should be highly contrasting with no more than one variegated colourway used. If you choose a neutral, it works best if the neutral is lighter than the other coloured yarn. Tonals work very well for this type of knitting.
