There are so many reasons to knit a top-down sweater: you can try it on as you go (yay!), there's usually much less purling (yay!), and there's no seaming to do at the end (double yay!).

A follow-up to our Knitting Garments That Fit class (a strongly recommended prerequisite), this intermediate-level workshop will teach you the techniques typically used in top-down sweater knitting, including the following:

  • short rows (two varieties and how to substitute one for the other)
  • increases
  • backwards loop cast-on (and some little tricks for closing up underarm holes)
  • decreases

For this workshop, you will need the following:

  • approximately 220 yards of worsted weight yarn (chunky will be okay, too)
  • 16" circular needles in sizes 4.5 & 5 mm OR 5 & 5.5 mm (depending on personal gauge)
  • 24" circular needles in same size as main body needle
  • 8 stitch markers that are alike (ideally, numbered ones are great!), 1 beginning-of-round stitch marker, 1 locking stitch marker, and 4 other stitch markers
  • double-pointed needles, 9" or 10" circular needle, or a long circular (if you know magic loop) in the same size as the main body needle
  • try-on (Knitting Barber) cords OR a darning needle and waste yarn

(You'll find that sweater knitting does require an investment in needles, but the good news is that you can reuse them again and again and again and again!)
