Slow knitting at its best and on-point with the latest fashion trends out of Paris (okay, I made that up), the intarsia knitting technique lets you create pictures or colour blocks in your knitting! In this advanced-beginner workshop, you will learn:
- How to read a chart for colour blocking
- When to use a bobbin
- Tips for estimating yarn needed for your colour blocks
- A little trick for changing colours that will change your life (I made that up too, but it will certainly be less stressful for those who like a near-perfect gauge)
- Tips for darning in the ends
Your practice pattern will be a tiny Christmas Snowman sweater. Once you’ve completed the first, you will have the confidence and skills to make several to create a lovely garland or slip a gift card into for a knit-worthy person. You will be provided with the pattern and some sample Christmas chart motifs to continue your knitting journey.
You will need:
- 4 mm needles – straights or circulars, but preferably with long, pointy (lace) knitting tips
- Two or more colours of DK-weight yarn in a wool or wool blend (it needs to have give to it, so not cotton, linen or silk); consider sparkly for fun and festive!
- Tapestry needle
If you have an intarsia pattern in mind, bring it with you so you can begin the planning process.
This workshop is intended for advanced-beginner knitters who are confident knitting flat; can achieve consistent gauge in both knits and purls; are able to “read” their knitting; and are not afraid to learn how to work with charts.
